Years ago, I sold a pair of Jane Shelton upholstered club chairs on Facebook Marketplace, and the number of messages I received about them was truly overwhelming. Ultimately, the chairs found a new home with a young couple starting out in their first house—after I had enjoyed them in my own family home, originally sourced from the talented interior designer Mallory Mathison’s Southeastern Showhouse nearly a decade earlier.

It’s such a privilege to purchase second-hand and have a sense of the history behind each piece, knowing where it’s been and the lives it’s touched. Below, I’ve shared my top tips for navigating Facebook Marketplace, along with a few fun recent finds.

Search in High Socio-Economic Areas
I often browse neighborhoods like Greenwich, CT, and have stumbled upon incredible finds, from Christopher Spitzmiller lamps to items from Kips Bay Showhouse spaces. The more affluent areas tend to have quality pieces at reasonable prices, often from people looking to downsize or redecorate.
Train Your Algorithm
The more you search and engage with specific types of items, the better your recommendations will become. Be sure to ‘save’ your favorites and follow specific sellers to help fine-tune your feed with what you're really after.
Don’t Be Afraid to Personalize
If you find an item that’s almost perfect but needs a little something extra, don’t hesitate to buy it and upgrade it with your personal touch. Whether it's a coat of paint, new fabric, or a few added details, Marketplace is a great place to score affordable pieces with endless potential for customization.
Set Alerts for Specific Items
You can save searches for specific keywords or items you’re interested in (like “vintage chairs” or “antique mirror”). This way, you’ll get notified when something matching your criteria is listed. It’s a great way to catch new items right when they go live.
Use Filters Wisely
Take full advantage of Marketplace’s filter options, especially the price range and distance settings. Set your price filter slightly above your budget to allow for negotiation and keep your search radius wide—sometimes a great deal is just a short drive away.
Vet the Seller
Check the seller’s profile to see if they have a history of positive transactions. Look for reviews or past items they’ve sold, and if you can, ask for more pictures or details about the item before committing.
Bargain Like a Pro
Facebook Marketplace is often a place for negotiating. Start with a polite, reasonable offer and be prepared for a counteroffer. If the price seems a bit high, there’s no harm in asking if they’d consider a lower price, especially if the item has been listed for a while.
Be Ready to Act Fast
Good deals don’t last long. If you find something you love, message the seller right away to express interest. The sooner you act, the better your chances of getting the item.
Inspect the Item in Person
If possible, always inspect the item before committing to buying it. Pictures can be deceiving, so seeing the item up close will ensure it’s what you expect. Bring cash and be prepared to make a quick transaction if the piece is in good condition.
